When it comes to carpet, maintenance is the most important thing. Regular carpet maintenance not only keeps the carpet clean, but it also prolongs the life of the carpet. Additionally, carpet cleanliness is linked to health. Effective carpet maintenance can be put in four key categories: Prevention, Vacuuming, Steam Cleaning, and Stain Removal.
It is easy for dirt from the outside to come inside our home. Just think about what we walk on during the course of the day. Now imagine bringing all of that home on our carpet. While you might not see the dirt and germs, it is there and it can be making you sick and reducing the life of your carpet.
The first recommendation is to make sure you have mats at the entrance way to wipe off shoes. Also, removing shows prior to walking on the carpet is a good practice to pick up. The key is preventing dirt from making it’s way into your home.
To say vacuuming is important is an understatement. It seems like a simple thing to do, but it is often overlooked. At the very least, our carpet should be vacuumed once a week. However, if you have pets, children, or high traffic, vacuum more often. Vacuum with a HEPA filter if someone in the home suffers with allergies.
With vacuuming, it’s not enough to wait until we see the carpet get dirty. Carpet is designed to hide dirt. So vacuuming even when carpet appears clean is necessary. Spend money on a high quality vacuum as going cheap with a vacuum cleaner is not worth it in the long run. My recommendation is the Dyson Cyclone V10. It’s lightweight, but powerful.
This is another aspect of carpet cleaning that people disregard. Steam cleaning your carpet does a deeper cleaning than vacuuming. Remember, just because you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean your carpet is clean.
I recommend steam cleaning your carpet once a year. If you have extreme, high-traffic areas, it wouldn’t hurt to do it twice. Before steam cleaning your carpet, I recommend reviewing the manufacturer recommendations for your carpet.
There are numerous companies that offer steam cleaning services. However, it is just as easy to go to the local supermarket and Walmart and rent a rug doctor machine. The rental fee is around $25/day. For most people, one day is all you need to steam clean the carpet in the house.
Removing Spots and Stains
The longer a spot and stain stays on a carpet, the harder it is for it to come out. Because of this, clean stains immediately. While it might seem like a daunting task, there are effective solutions to get out stains. One product that I highly recommend to have around the house is Spot Shot Carpet Stain Remover.
Before using any product, test the solution in a non visible. Also, read the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning carpet. In a lot of cases, carpet installers will come out to clean stains for a period of time after installation.
